CBHS Newsletter 5 - Nov '10

Dear Parents

Today marks our last formal teaching day for the year. On Monday the exam session starts and will continue until Friday 3rd December 2010. This morning, in Assembly, Mr Mostert briefed the school on the exam rules.

The WCED wishes each pupil to be at school every day during the exams. Parents may choose to keep their children at home if they so wish, but must furnish the school with a letter if this is the case. Pupils attending school on their non-exam days will be put into supervised study classes. The times during the exam are 08h00 to 13h00 every day. There will be a break from 09h00 to 09h30. If pupils write a short exam they must come to school with material to study from in the time prior to the exam.

The text books that the school issued MUST be returned after their final exam in that subject. We have to replace all lost or damaged books and will expect you to pay for your child’s lost books.

BUDGET MEETING
24TH NOVEMBER 2010 @ 5:30PM
In the John Ince Hall

This is a second notification to all Parents inviting you to attend a meeting where we approve the school budget for 2011. If you want to view the budget prior to this meeting, please mail me on dekorte@campsbayhigh.co.za. At this meeting we will set the school fees for 2011. The current proposal is an 8% increase of fees for 2011 to R20 500 a year.

SPORT

Waterpolo (Boys)
The 1st team played against a combination of the 1st and 2nd team of Westerford. They played well and were leading with one chukka to go when unfortunately Westerford came back strongly and won 6 – 4. Well done to the team for a great match and special mention to be made of Gabriel Hair for some fantastic saves.

Swimming
Camps Bay took part in a relay gala and came 2nd overall. Congratulations to the U14 girls and U16 boys who won all of their races. Thanks to all the officials who made the day possible.

Tennis (Girls)
The 1st team played against Springfield and drew 3 – 3.

Tennis (Boys)
Our 1st boys’ tennis team has had a good term so far. Having remained undefeated in the previous season in the 3rd league, they were promoted to the 2nd league and have gone from strength to strength. Of the four matches played this term, only one ended in a defeat of 2 - 4 to Bishops. In the other matches they beat SACS 4 – 2, Fishoek 6 – 0 and Westerford 5 – 1. The team consists of Nicholas Ngcobo, Elvin Khanyere, Shaheen Wadvalla and Stephen Hagglund. Well done boys, keep it up!

Basketball (Girls)
All the teams played against Bergvliet.
U16s won 16 – 6. Robin-Sue Nicholas scored 4 baskets.
The U19 won 30 – 9. Demi van Reenen, Khanyisa Sidwendu and Cindy Akinyi scored 5 baskets each. Every player scored at least once. Well done!

Cricket
On 30th October the U15s played against Jan Van Riebeek who batted first and scored 65 runs. Good bowling performance by Lunga (5 overs – 3 wickets for 19 runs) and Ben Samsodien (2 overs – 3 wickets for 10 runs). Camps Bay then batted and scored 67 runs for 3 wickets.
Top Scorer was Liam Adams who scored 33 runs not out. Camps Bay won by 7 wickets.
The U19s played Table View. CBHS batted first and scored 76 runs. Cavan Fyfe batted excellently and scored 39 runs. Table View passed the score by 1 wicket left. Ntsika Shushu bowled brilliantly to take 5 wickets for 20 runs. Table View beat CBHS with 1 wicket. Well done on a good fight-back.

Text Books
After the final exams we expect each textbook that we issued to be returned. Please talk to your child and confirm that they still have all their books. Lost books will need to be replaced as we need them for the 2011 class. There will be the usual opportunity to sell the books that you bought.

The last week of term, namely 6th to 10th December will be managed in the following way:
On the 6th the pupils will get their exam scripts back to check. On the 7th, 8th and 9th the Prefects will run ‘spectrum week’ at the school. These will be 3 days of supervised activities. On the last day of school, Friday 10th December we will go to the beach and close at 11h00. On all the other days we will maintain our exam closing time of 13h00.

We wish all our pupils well as they study for these important final exams.

Yours sincerely

MR D DE KORTE

CBHS Newsletter 4 - Oct '10

Dear Parents

Thank you for your support for the school in attending our Celebration prize and award evening on the 13th October. This was a wonderful celebration of the life of the school and the achievements of our pupils.

Matric Exam
We formally said goodbye to our Matric pupils at a special Valedictory Assembly on the 20th October. This was a sad moment that ended 5 years of schooling at Camps Bay High School. Before the assembly the matrics enjoyed tea and eats with their parents and the staff around the pool. After the assembly the school hosted a final lunch for the matrics and staff.

The exams have already started and the pupils appear to be happy with the papers. Today’s history exam was visited by 2 exam monitors from the Department of Education.

Prefects for 2011
The new prefects for 2011 were announced at celebration. We are very pleased with the group that were voted in. After their election they went on a planning weekend. At the end of this they elected a Head Prefect and two Deputies. It gives me great pleasure to introduce the new prefects to the parents. They are:

Budget Meeting
24 Nov 2010 @ 5:30PM
In the John Ince Hall
This is a notification to all Parents inviting you to attend a meeting where we approve the school budget for 2011. If you want to view the budget prior to this meeting, please mail dekorte@campsbayhigh.co.za. At this meeting we will set the school fees for 2011.

Drug Awareness
We currently have Jarydd and Donovan from the Drug Awareness Agency in the school. They have spoken in assembly and are addressing classes and grades. They are also seeing small groups of children. Both have had their own journey into substance abuse and narrowly escaped with their lives. They are able to advice pupils wisely not to choose drugs. Can you ask your child about this programme. It runs until the end of this week.

Life Talk
You will have received a letter inviting you to this evenings’ meeting on Thursday 28th October at 6:30 pm. Even if you have a great relationship with your child, you could attend this talk and be a support to parents who are struggling.

Farewell
In the last 2 weeks we have lost through death two friends of Camps Bay High School.

Max Marin passed away after a long illness. His wife Shirley has worked at Camps Bay High school for many years as our resident archivist. Over the last 9 years she has worked in a part-time capacity. A number of staff members were able to support her by attending the funeral on 22nd October.

Steven Watson, a past pupil and Head Prefect (1975) died suddenly earlier this week. Heather his wife and their 4 children (Garth, Brett, Wayne, Dylan) all went to Camps Bay High School. Steve served as our governing body chairman until 2006 when his youngest son Dylan matriculated. He has been a hard-working community member, serving all three school as a governor over a period of 16 years uninterrupted service. The funeral will be on Saturday 30th October at the Sea Point Congregational Church, on the corner of Main and Marais Road at 10:30am.

Final Exams
A reminder that the final exams for the year start on the 15th November, a mere 2 weeks away. The exam timetable has been given to your child.

SPORT
Swimming
Camps Bay took part in a Gala at home against 6 other schools. They swam very well and came 3rd overall. Congratulations to all the swimmers and thanks to everyone who helped with the time-keeping. We encourage everyone to come and support us next week at home.

Tennis
The 1st team girls beat Westerford 5 – 1 but sadly lost to Rustenberg 4 – 2. Well done

Cricket
CBHS U19 played St Josephs who batted first and scored 73 runs all out. Elvin Kanyerere took 3 wickets for 10 runs, Aaqib Simons took 2 wickets for 14 runs and Dylan Meek took 2 wickets for 15 runs. Camps Bay then batted and scored 73 runs for 3 wickets. Kyle Horn was 49 not out. CBHS won by 7 wickets – well done.

Text Books
After the final exams we expect each textbook that we issued to be returned. Can you talk to your child and confirm that they still have all their books. Lost books will need to be replaced as we need them for the 2011 class. There will be the usual opportunity to sell the books that you bought.

CBHS With Remix Dance - Oct '10

From Monday 18 to Friday 29 October learners from Camps Bay High School worked with learners from Eros School for learners with Cerebral Palsy and Remix Dance Company to create an integrated dance piece. This was a fantastic opportunity for all as it challenged notions of what dance is and taught interesting ways of choreographing and using the body. The learners performed the piece they created at both schools and it was well received.

CBHS Nicola Soekoe - Valedictory Speech - Oct '10

Good morning Mr and Mrs Cassar, Mr and Mrs de Korte, staff, pupils and more specifically matrics.

So this is it. Right now is the last time that you are going to sit at a Camps Bay High School function as a pupil of this school. There is not much that I can say to convey the enormity of it all, but I’ll try my best.

At the beginning of 2006, we sat in the hall as grade eights. For some reason, probably because of the seriousness of the event, Lani and I got the giggles and continued to laugh uncontrollably for the whole assembly. It’s funny because 5 years later, our matric drama class did the same thing last week in our final practical exam. I guess we haven’t matured that much after all.

Still, our transformation as a grade and as individuals has been mind blowing. Yes, Tatiana Inocentes is STILL asking the same questions in Bio, Olo Toni STILL thinks that she can sing an Christy McCullagh is STILL making things explode, but something’s happened and through all our classes, our grade camps, our arguments, the fashion show, the valentines ball, the matric dance and everything else that we have done together, we have become a grade. So much of who each individual has grown to be, depends on our grade. For example it’s impossible to mention the name Luke without mentioning Stefano. But Luke told me to say that they arte JUST FRIENDS.

So where does that leave us now. We’ve become so used to seeing each other all the time, everyday and now we’re all leaving. All going our separate paths and personally am so scared. Partly because I don’t know what life has in stall for me, and partly because I’m not going to have you guys there by my side, assuring me that everything’s going to be okay. I think that makes my fear of leaving school so much worse, knowing that If I burst out in tears at varsity, my whole class won’t stop and make sure that I am okay; or if I mess up, I’m not going to have my whole grade telling me that it will all turn out for the best. I think it is going to be a lot harder for all of us not have each other every step of the way.

Over the years it hasn’t always been easy. We’ve had our problems, but through it all our grade has learnt so much about what it means to fight for the success of something greater. It’s more than individual achievements or personal rewards; it’s going for something with all your heart and fighting for your peers as well as yourself. Robert F Kennedy said “Few will have the greatness to bend history itself, but each of us can work to change a small portion of events, and in the total of all these acts will be written the history of this generation” I think that our grade has learned to work selflessly and I believe that we can go out there and change the world. Not any one of us, but I am certain that together we can play our part in writing history. I say this because matrics, you are the most amazing a real people that I know.

I want to say again that this Is sit. It feels like a dream, I know, but we are about to close a whole chapter of our lives. To end on a good note I need you to do 2 things: Firstly, take everything you have, every bit of determination and will that this school has taught you, and put that into your exams. Get the results you’ve always known were possible. And secondly, when this ceremony is about to end, and Mr de Korte asks us to stand and sing our school song, sing it with all the pride you have inside of you. Because that is who we are. We are the matric class of 2010. I’m sad to call us past pupils of Camps Bay High School. See you at club berg!

Nicola Soekoe
Head Prefect 2010

CBHS Nicola Soekoe's Celebration Speech - Oct '10

Good Evening Mr and Mrs Cassar, Mr and Mrs De Korte, teachers, parents, honoured guests and pupils of Camps Bay High School.

Now that my time at Camps Bay High School is coming to a rapid end, I have come to a conclusion. I believe that every teenager should spend some time at Camps Bay High School. Maybe a month, or a term, not a year - if we give them a year they’ll never leave! The reason I say this is that the Camps Bay High School corridors teach one something that I believe is impossible to imitate anywhere else in the world. You see when a stranger asks me about Camps Bay High, I say it’s amazing, wonderful, brilliant, but there’s just that one thing that I can’t describe. It’s so much more than anything any other school has to offer. It’s a unique quality: an energy, an undying spirit, a passion and devotion to our second home.

So where did this all start. Any ideas Mr Tucker?

Firstly there is Mr de Korte and the school governing body, who together put so much time and effort into ensuring that this school is a sea of opportunities for it’s pupils. Mr de Korte’s dedication and love for our school make it so easy for him to earn the huge amount of respect that we all have for him and the governing body dedicates hours of time behind the scenes to ensuring that we learn in the best environment possible.

Then there are our quirky and passionate teachers who, aside from being brilliant at their job, are also friends and role models to us all. Teachers like Mr Cawood who, no matter how much he screams at you, you can’t help but love his funny comments. Or the English department who get so drawn into our set works that it seems crazy to think this is probably the 17th time they’re reading each book.

Then there’s the ground staff. Always smiling and ever so helpful. Our school would collapse without you. Whether it be our new caretaker John, who happily goes without much sleep when performances and rehearsals are on at our school, or Mrs Motha, one of the sweetest and most loving women whom I have ever met. She will always greet you with a warming smile.

Then there are the pupils. What a crazy bunch. Wow! When I look at you guys, so many of my friends, so many that I have grown to love, I see the world. Amongst you there is so much potential not only to excel, but to shine. Because that is what Camps Bay High School allows you to do, to discover your passion and act as a beam of light radiating from the core which is this school. And the greatest part about it all is that no matter what you do while you are here, and no matter if you are extremely talented or in it for the fun, you can be certain that you will have the whole school behind you. 100%, cheering you on. Because that is how we do it here.

So put all those people together in one room, or should I say in beautiful one school overlooking the ocean, and there’s a good chance that something amazing will be born. It has been amazing. Even more so this year than ever before. At the beginning of the year I said a speech in assembly in which I said “This is it!’ 2010 is finally here, and it will be a year of greatness.” And it has. In sports, dedication and passion have lead to cases such as 16 year old Ntsika Shushu being chosen for the Western Province u19 cricket team. In culture, hours of practice and immense help from teachers have allowed Amanda Dyanti, who in grade eight was very shy and scared of performing, to, along with Cleo Raatus, win the overall best duologue in the international theatre and dance association eisteddfod. A huuuuge accolade. In academics Gerome Tangocci represented our School in Johannesburg at the national Eskom Science Expo, receiving a bronze medal. It is people like him who will one day save the world. This year alone, our school has more gold president award winners than we have had in total in our school’s history. Our school spirit has hit the top leaving Westerord High School unable to compete at our annual derby. Inter-house rivalry has skyrocketed ensuring mass participation IN EVERYTHING from inter-house plays to athletics days and recycling. Our pool has been renovated, which can only increase our already high standard of swimming and water polo. Our tuck-shop has had a makeover with the introduction of Ardi’s tuck café… Which might account for why all our school uniform looks a little tight on us tonight.

From the prefects side, besides our work on spirit, discipline and promoting sports achievers, first time events such as a prefect exchange with many different schools, attending the prefects ball, and hosting the Battle Of The Dance Crews have been awesome highlights. All in all it is easy to see how HUGE this year has been. We’ve done it… and looking at the up and coming leaders of our school I know that we will continue to soar to even greater heights with each progressive year.

To the Grade 8-11's. Make sure that when you’re sitting at Celebration for the last time, you’ve played your part in our schools greatness. The camps, the tours, the houses, the school plays, the spirit… Make sure that when you’re sitting here for the last time, your head is filled with memories You’ve got involved, you’ve loved, learnt, shared. Because your high school careers at Camps Bay High School can teach you so much more than what is learnt in the class room. If you let it, this school will give you an education that extends beyond any text book.

To the matrics. I care for you all and as I look around at our Grade, I see the most amazing people who are going to grow in to adults who are successful. Not necessarily in terms of monetary wealth, but in the best sense of the word in terms of happiness. .

To the governing body, the teachers, the prefects. Thank you fro giving me this opportunity. Your support and kindness has made my year into the best of my life.

To the pupils Thank you for giving Me, Julia and the rest of the prefect body a chance to lead you this year. You’re all the most amazing friends and your support throughout year has meant the world to me. Every day you all taught me what it is to be a leader. It hasn’t been easy, but nothing worth leading ever is, and it’s been a worthy and inspiring challenge. I hope that in some small way, the prefects of 2010 have lead and inspired you all to strive for the highest.

CBHS Cricket Tour to East London - Oct '10

Camps Bay Cricket 1st XI team left on tour on 23 September 2010 to East London. They played four games and unfortunately lost all, with the last one being an exciting T20 against Cambridge High School. The team enjoyed five days in East London, visiting the beachfront, the schools in the area and enjoying team spirit. Congratulations to Nsika Shushu and Kyle Horn for outstanding performances.

CBHS Participates in 350.org - 11 Oct '10

On Monday 11 October at midday on Camps Bay beach, 160 grade 8’s (13 year olds) from Camps Bay High School walked the length of Camps Bay beach and left only one set of footprints to symbolise reduced environmental impact. They all walked down the beach in a long line stepping into each other's footsteps.
This event formed a small part of what looks to be the biggest, widest protest action the world has ever seen. On Sunday 10/10/10 (i.e. 10th October, 2010), in almost every country in the world, thousands of people gathered to make themselves heard on this matter.
Here we are on the 350.org website:

Our Grade 11 pupils once again embarked on the school's annual Orange River Trip from Saturday, 24 September to Thursday, 30 September 2010. The pupils were accompanied by Mr Brynn Taylor, Ms Alexa le Chat and Ms Janet Thomson. The first night was spent at base camp and the following morning, the rowing began. Four days were spent soaking up the Namibian sun while covering over 60 kilometres of the Orange River. Huge fun, laughter, good food, amazing sights and a real feel for the great outdoors was experienced by all.

newsletter september 2010

Dear Parents

The Western Cape branch of the South African Principal’s Association hosted their National Conference in the Convention Centre at the end of last week. One of the speakers that really challenged the 800 delegates Prof Brian O’Connell. Professor O’Connell is the Vice Chancellor of the University of the Western Cape. He challenged us to stop ‘dreaming’ that things would get better in South Africa just because we are South Africans.

This culture, of believing that we as a nation are special he called exceptionalism. The challenge is to work and work very hard. Brian asked repeatedly why we thought we could do things without actually doing them. To illustrate this, he showed a number of pictures of the world map where he digitally altered the shape of the countries depending on various criteria. When he introduced the criterias of new patents registered, and the number of library books read, Africa virtually disappeared while China, India and Japan grew out of all proportion to their normal size.

To the principals present this was a call to action. The only hope for our future is to equip all our pupils with the knowledge and skills to compete in the global economy. The delegates were amused when he noted that we need a new mind-set for success. This includes not always asking what government’s doing, and having far fewer than 21 children.

FASHION SHOW
The Grade 11 Fashion Show on the 3rd and 4th September was fantastic. The theme was “ Real and Surreal”, and all the groups developed creative ways of exploring this. Ms Martens and her teacher team included a massive group of Grade 11’s in the show. We were enthralled by their presentations and the evening was a great success.

NEW POOL
On Monday 13th September, we held our Assembly next to our new pool. The water is in and the pool looks stunning. At Assembly I informed the pupils of how we came to re-doing the pool, what it entailed and how we would be utilizing it. I also mentioned our dreams for the future to heat and cover the pool. A more immediate plan for 2011 is to put some permanent stands against the bank. To end the Assembly, Mr Cottle and I had some rivalry around who should have the right to get into the pool first. We then surprised everyone by simply diving in then and there. On Tuesday we held our first boys waterpolo practice, however, the water temperature kept the practice fairly short. A big thanks must go to Colin Harvey, the Governor who has managed this project from start to finish.

MATRIC EXAMS
The Matrics are coming to the end of their Prelims. These exams have gone very well, and we are hoping that they have all achieved the results they deserve. The Matrics will get their reports on the last day of term (Thursday 23rd September at 11am).

GRADE 11 CAMP
We wish our Grade 11 pupils well as they go to Paarl for the Grade 11 Leadership Camp next week (Mon 20th – Wed 21st September). Over these 3 days they will be given many varied experiences in working as a team and leading their classmates in performing various tasks.

PARENT MEETING GRADE 8 – 11
(16h30 – 18h30)
The reports will be handed out at a Parents Meeting on WEDNESDAY 22ND SEPTEMBER. The meeting will start at 16h30 with a 20 minute general meeting from 16h30 to 16h50. After this time the reports will be handed out and then there will be an opportunity to meet with the teachers. The meeting will end at 18h30. To allow the Jewish parents and teachers to get home in time for supper and the start of Succoth.

LAST WEEK OF TERM
We will be working in all classes up to and including Wednesday 22nd September. These will be normal school days. On Thursday 23rd September we will have a sports’ programme and movie programme for the pupils and will end school at 11am.
