CBHS Prague / Paris Ballet Tour - Jul '14

Camps Bay High School is very proud of one of their Grade Nine learners, Nina Mercorio, a pupil of the Susan de Moyencourt School of Ballet, who recently participated in a Prague/Paris Ballet tour. During the last two weeks of the tour the girls competed in an international competition in Prague. There were competitors from all over the world and the girls won the classical ballet section, winning five trophies.

Before you get swamped I thought I would send you a little feedback from the Prague/Paris ballet tour that Nina went on during the holidays.

The girls were there for the last two weeks and competed in an International competition in Prague. There were competitors from all over the world and the girls won the Classical Ballet section, winning five trophies in total! This was the most out of any of the countries represented, even the higher ranked very internationally experienced groups. They also attended classes and workshops in both Prague and Paris. I have attached a few photo’s that hopefully portray the atmosphere. In Prague in particular they walked to the theatre, danced all morning, walked back home, did some sightseeing in the afternoon and walked back to the theatre every night to compete.

It was a tremendous amount of hard work, dedication, perseverance beyond illness (Nina had flu when she left after having danced in the Cape Town CJB Ballet Company Show every night for a week before she left as well as training for the tour) and of course teamwork. Eight girls together in close proximity for two weeks and not a single argument or hiccup! . Nina arrived back in Cape Town exhausted and really thin, but richer for the experience.

An incredible experience, a lot learned and much maturing. Nina was the only girl who never lost a thing, not her phone, bank card, passport, ticket, camera, costume... nothing! She was the first ready for every event – bag packed, groomed for performance and ready to go. We are all very proud of her as for two weeks she had to do everything herself, cope on her own, sort out her own problems and organise herself which she did without a hitch -  but glad its all done, now to continue that into the term.

CBHS Renovates Sentinel Primary School - Jul '14

Matthew Harvey (past pupil and Head Prefect of Camps Bay High School) was part of an initiative to renovate a classroom at Sentinel Primary School at Hangberg in Hout Bay, to house pre-primary school pupils as from the beginning of this term. This will mean that children of Hangberg who are currently spending most of their days on the streets waiting to start school in Grade One next year have an opportunity to start at a Pre-School. Matthew lead a team of Camps Bay Schools pupils (from the Primary and High Schools) who wanted to clock hours for their President's Awards, as well as others who just wanted to help.

This is a project which has been started by a group of dedicated women of HET (Hangberg Educational Trust) which his mom, Mrs Michele Harvey has officially joined. The team completed an amazing project and can be very proud of their community service offered.
