CBHS Orange River Tour - Sept '10

Our Grade 11 pupils once again embarked on the school's annual Orange River Trip from Saturday, 24 September to Thursday, 30 September 2010. The pupils were accompanied by Mr Brynn Taylor, Ms Alexa le Chat and Ms Janet Thomson. The first night was spent at base camp and the following morning, the rowing began. Four days were spent soaking up the Namibian sun while covering over 60 kilometres of the Orange River. Huge fun, laughter, good food, amazing sights and a real feel for the great outdoors was experienced by all.

newsletter september 2010

Dear Parents

The Western Cape branch of the South African Principal’s Association hosted their National Conference in the Convention Centre at the end of last week. One of the speakers that really challenged the 800 delegates Prof Brian O’Connell. Professor O’Connell is the Vice Chancellor of the University of the Western Cape. He challenged us to stop ‘dreaming’ that things would get better in South Africa just because we are South Africans.

This culture, of believing that we as a nation are special he called exceptionalism. The challenge is to work and work very hard. Brian asked repeatedly why we thought we could do things without actually doing them. To illustrate this, he showed a number of pictures of the world map where he digitally altered the shape of the countries depending on various criteria. When he introduced the criterias of new patents registered, and the number of library books read, Africa virtually disappeared while China, India and Japan grew out of all proportion to their normal size.

To the principals present this was a call to action. The only hope for our future is to equip all our pupils with the knowledge and skills to compete in the global economy. The delegates were amused when he noted that we need a new mind-set for success. This includes not always asking what government’s doing, and having far fewer than 21 children.

FASHION SHOW
The Grade 11 Fashion Show on the 3rd and 4th September was fantastic. The theme was “ Real and Surreal”, and all the groups developed creative ways of exploring this. Ms Martens and her teacher team included a massive group of Grade 11’s in the show. We were enthralled by their presentations and the evening was a great success.

NEW POOL
On Monday 13th September, we held our Assembly next to our new pool. The water is in and the pool looks stunning. At Assembly I informed the pupils of how we came to re-doing the pool, what it entailed and how we would be utilizing it. I also mentioned our dreams for the future to heat and cover the pool. A more immediate plan for 2011 is to put some permanent stands against the bank. To end the Assembly, Mr Cottle and I had some rivalry around who should have the right to get into the pool first. We then surprised everyone by simply diving in then and there. On Tuesday we held our first boys waterpolo practice, however, the water temperature kept the practice fairly short. A big thanks must go to Colin Harvey, the Governor who has managed this project from start to finish.

MATRIC EXAMS
The Matrics are coming to the end of their Prelims. These exams have gone very well, and we are hoping that they have all achieved the results they deserve. The Matrics will get their reports on the last day of term (Thursday 23rd September at 11am).

After this time the reports will be handed out and then there will be an opportunity to meet with the teachers. The meeting will end at 18h30.
