CBHS Rapewise Talks About Mixit, Facebook, Chat Rooms - Sept '09

On Monday, 7 September 2009, we were so privileged to have Dr John Buswell from RapeWise to talk to our Primary and High School learners, the staff from all three schools as well as our Camps Bay Schools’ parent body. Although the content of his four different talks overlapped, he addressed crucial issues with each of the four audiences in such an informative manner that he left us all realizing how important a disciplined approach to all the wonderful technology that we have available to us, is.

CBHS Successful Past Pupils Day - Aug '09

PAST PUPILS SPORTS DAY
Our Past Pupils Day on Saturday 30 Aug 2009 turned out to be a great success. It was so good to see all our past pupils back and share with them what they have done with their lives. We competed in all the sports codes, and the winner was good sportsmanship and good fun. As usual at these occasion, there was, a fair bit of good-natured banter between the past pupils and their old teachers who were ‘reffing’ the games. The morning ended with everyone watching the Springboks beat Australia on the big screen in the Seminar Room.

MATRIC PRACTICE EXAMS
The Matrics have started writing and so we are all trying to be quiet around the exam venues. This is their final practice exam before they start writing next month. Even though its two months away in real time, they will be starting towards the end of October and we are now in September; hence ‘next month’. We wish them every success possible.

MIXIT, FACEBOOK, TEENAGE PARTIES, NEW SEXUAL OFFENCE LAWS etc.
We have an organization who specialize in talking to schools and parents on these topics. We as the Camps Bay Schools have invited them to come down and address our schools on Monday 7th September. They will talk to all the High School pupils from 11:00 – 12:00, then to the staff from 15:00 – 16:00 and finally you the parents from 19:00 to 21:00 in the High School Hall. I have attended their presentation and found it most helpful and informative. This convinced me to bring them down from Johannesburg to our schools. I strongly encourage you are parents to come along and hear what they have to say.
Kindly RSVP Vivienne Ashcroft on 082-466-8261 or e-mail her on campsbayschools@gmail.com by Monday morning, 7th September 2009.

ALL PARENTS INVITED

Dear Parents

This years Matric Dance at the Rotunda Ball Room turned out every bit as magical as expected. Mrs Wessels, Mr Jenneke and their team of Grade 12 Tutors managed to transform the venue into an ‘Ice Palace’. The stage became an Ice Cave, and backdrop to numerous group photographs. The high-domed ceiling of the ball room had white drapes running from the floor to the chandelier. With well planned lighting, the venue looked incredible. A nice new touch this year was the addition of a message book for each Grade 12. This allowed them to write expressions of friendship to each other in the course of the evening. Russell Daries gave an inspiring address to the Matric Class of 2009. This Grade 12 group have a great class spirit, which was evident throughout the evening. The DJ could not believe it when the entire grade got on the floor to do a line dance. This was truly an evening where memories were made.

ALCOHOL AWARENESS WEEK
Alcohol Awareness week saw our pupils engage with their tutors and Life Orientation teachers in discussing the dangers of alcohol abuse. The week was launched by Kim Brand, who told her story in Assembly. She was driving home with her boyfriend behind the wheel. They had both been drinking. He lost control of the car, and in the crash she lost her eyesight. There were many questions that the pupils put to her in Assembly. She answered them all with humour and honesty. The new Minister of Education, Donald Grant, came to the Assembly to support this initiative. We had a wrecked car on its roof in front of the school to raise awareness for the week. We painted the car with ‘blackboard’ paint, and pupils wrote sayings around alcohol awareness on the car. These included:
• This is not how you want the party to end
• Your life can change in an instant
• One drink too many
• Alcohol can turn your life upside down
• This can be a life sentence

GOVERNING BODY
The first meeting of the new governors was held earlier this month. It gives me great pleasure to announce the following parents who will be serving you as governors for the next 3 years.

Ardi Hagglund - Discipline
Michelle Harvey - Special Projects

SWINE FLU
A tremendous amount of hype has developed around this strain of flu. It seems as if every school has a few pupils who have contracted this flu. At Camps Bay High we have one confirmed case. He has been sick but has recently returned to school completely well. The WCED has issued a circular on this, and I will include some of their information below:

How does the flu virus spread?
Influenza viruses are very infectious. It is almost impossible to stop influenza viruses, whether seasonal or pandemic, from spreading from person to person mainly through coughing or sneezing by infected people. Touching surfaces such as counters and doorknobs with influenza viruses on them can also infect people and afterwards their mouth, nose or eyes. This is why handwashing helps. However influenza viruses are very infectious and all precautions can only decrease, but not eliminate, risk.

How can the spread be limited?
You can reduce the risk of getting or spreading influenza by taking standard precautions:
• Wash your hands or clean them with alcohol-based hand rubs frequently, especially after you cough or sneeze and before you eat.
• Cover your nose and mouth with a clean tissue when you cough or sneeze, and throw the tissue in a rubbish bin immediately after you have used it.
• Alternatively, cough and sneeze into your sleeve.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth, as you could infect yourself that way.
• Limit close (1 to 2 meter) contact with people who are sick with flu.
• If you get sick, stay at home and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

Symptoms of an influenza like illness:
These are the same for pandemic and seasonal influenza. Typical symptoms include a sudden onset of high fever, cough, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, headache, body aches, chills, tiredness, and lack of appetite. Some of those affected have reported nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

BAYSIDE SCHOOL
We were very sad to learn that Bayside Christian School in Hout Bay is closing at the end of August. The school has over the years offered a very nurturing faith-based school experience to its pupils. We have offered some of the pupils place at Camps Bay and hope that they will be happy here.

PAST PUPILS SPORTS DAY
Saturday 29th August
Hockey
Netball
Rugby

This is a wonderful sporting day always enjoyed by all. Please support.

At Camps Bay High we like to try new ways of really doing things. Some times this is not necessary, like the recent Afrikaans camp. The Grade 12’s benefited tremendously from their intensive Afrikaans weekend in Elgin under the leadership of Mr Cawood and his team. On Friday we did do something new, when the Grade 8s’ and 9’s were assessed for their Life Orientation mark on an outdoor ‘Ultimate Survival’ course. This was a new and novel way of evaluating pupils while they were having fun solving problems. Well done to Ms Herbert and her team of Grade 11 group leaders.

Looking ahead this week, we have some of our Grade 11 Science pupils going to display their research projects at the MTN Science centre. We wish them all the best. On Saturday 29th August we have our past pupils day. This is usually a wonderful opportunity for our past pupils to catch up with each other and their old school. If you know anyone who wants to play, please contact Mr Becker at the school. Otherwise simply come along and enjoy the occasion.

On Saturday we have a few of our pupils playing in the Beau Soleil Gala Concert in the City Hall. Good luck to Lisa Duvenage, Eric de Korte, Mfundo Manana and Ruben de Girardier.

The academic focus is this terms number one priority. The test and assignment programme is to be followed carefully and can help you at home to keep track of your child’s work.

Yours sincerely

CBHS Newsletter 6 - Jul '09

Dear Parents

We start this term with the highlight of the Matric’s year; their Matric Dance. This year the dance moves back to the Rotunda Ball Room in Camps Bay. We are looking forward to a wonderful evening with the theme ‘The Ice Palace’. The Grade Heads, Mr Jenneke and Mrs Wessels along with the Tutors are creating a royal court in the ballroom. The weather looks good for Saturday, and all the preparation are in hand. I wish all the Matrics all the best for the Dance.

On Monday we start a week of "Awareness of the Dangers of Alcohol". We will have a guest speaker in the Monday and Friday Assemblies. All Tutor classes and Life Orientation classes will focus on the topic.

OUR ARTISTS

In the holidays 4 of our Senior Artists were awarded prizes in the Chaeli Foundation Art Competition. In the Grade 10 – 12 Art Section – Danica Davies came 2nd and Taryn Esterhuizen came 1st . The High School Sculpture section saw Camps Bay again take 1st and 2nd place, with Michaela de Pinna in 2nd place and Artur Bromfield in 1st place. Congratulations to these four very talented pupils and to Mrs Myburgh their teacher.

CAMPS BAY FLOPPIES FINISH IN A BLAZE OF GLORY

Dawn Eugster (a past parent) and her large group of friends staged two nights of Camps Bay Floppies. As part of her birthday celebration, she decided to stage this well known Camps Bay comedy extravaganza to raise money for two worthy causes. The first night raised money through Hamiltons Rugby Club for Bruce Little (an ex CBHS pupil who works at Hamiltons Rugby Club) who lost his leg through diabetes and has no medical aid. The second nights proceeds went towards the Interactive White Board Project at Camps Bay High School. We at the school are very grateful to Dawn and her team for their generosity. A big thank you to Soli Philander who was the compare for both evenings.

INTERACTIVE WHITEBOARDS

We are so pleased to be able to announce that we bought 3 new Interactive White Boards for the teachers to use in their classrooms. It came as such a pleasant surprise when we learned that an anonymous donor had given us an extra board. This brings the total number of whiteboards at the school to five (we installed our first one last year). This is such a wonderful teaching aid. We will arrange for all parents to see these boards at our next parent evening. We are aiming to give each subject department a board. So far we have covered English, Afrikaans, Maths, Biology and Commerce.

WORK EXPERIENCE

We ended the 2nd term with all our Grade 11 pupils spending 3 days on their job shadow programme. Here they spent time ‘shadowing’ people in jobs that they may do when they leave school. This is a great opportunity to get first hand experience of a particular job. Often this either cements a pupils career choice, or puts them off. I have had only good reports on how the Grade 11’s conducted themselves.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

The Grade 10 pupils spent the last week of the 2nd term serving our community in many ways. This involved helping at schools, old-age homes, animal rescue shelters and many other activities. One group of boys spent their time helping at the Sea Point Police Station and during their time were responsible for giving a thief a fright, causing him to drop the stolen TV he was carrying in order to run away. The boys then recovered the stolen item. A group of pupils also helped Camps Bay Watch by going door to door to distribute leaflets for them.

AFRIKAANS MATRIC CAMP

On the 31st August our Matric pupils who take Afrikaans will be going on a revision camp to Mizpah in Grabouw. Every year Mr Cawood and Ms Cronje arrange this and have found it very beneficial to the pupils.

Link
THE THREE CAMPS BAY SCHOOLS CROSS-COUNTRY

This will be held on Friday 7th August. The High School will start at 13h15 and all parents/family/friends are invited to come and support the pupils. Nearer the time we will be sending more information.

AMBASSADORS OF HOPE COMPETITION

‘Former United Nations Secretary General, Kofi Annon congratulated Gabi Goldberg and Naomi Mnyamnana (Grade 11) whose ‘pay it forward’ idea scooped the top prize on how to improve Africa during the Ambassadors of Hope Competition.’ (Atlantic Sun Thursday June 18 2009). We are very proud of these 2 pupils and this achievement. Gabi and Naomi describe their proposal: “We started a project that would go into communities and educate and equip people on how to grow their own vegetables and teach them about nutrition. Their duty would be to teach another family what they had learned, and so on. On a larger scale we can get schools to plant vegetable gardens where the children will learn how to do it. The children in turn go into their communities and share what they have learned”.

ACADEMIC RESULTS TERM 2

A list of our TOP 15 students in all the Grades for Term 2 can be viewed ‹‹here››. Well done to all!

SPORT

KARATE
Shaquille Williams (Grade 8) has obtained his black belt in karate.
He has been training since Grade 1 (2002) (at Sea Point Primary).
Shaquille we are very proud of you.

SA NATIONAL MARTIAL ARTS COMPETITION
Jefferson Lan competed in the Martial Arts Competition in Johannesburg and won 3 gold medals – well done to Jefferson.

The Sporting fixtures for this term were handed to all pupils today and will be uploaded here soon.

Please read the note from our bursar on the outstanding school fees ‹‹here››.

CBHS Pupils Distribute Leaflets for Camps Bay Neighbourhood Watch- Jul '09

Great news; a team of four young lads and a girl (all from Camps Bay High School) have done a really great job and managed to drop off our Public Meeting Announcement flyers at postboxes along all the remaining streets in the Village, as well as Clifton Road, Kloof Road, the apartments by the High School, Glen Beach, Victoria Road as far as Link and even the whole of Geneva Drive. Many thanks to Mile Hamilton, Jean Malan, Kyle Horn, Tim Schumann and Nicole Horn! Here they are enjoying well-deserved pizzas afterwards.
