Camps Bay High has been very busy over the last few weeks. I will attempt to give you a brief overview of some of the activities and achievements in this newsletter.
Fame – The Musical:
The Drama, Music and Dance departments joined forces to stage the hit musical “Fame” from 23 to 25 August. All the evenings were either sold out or close to sold out. The performance was professional and highly entertaining. The play provided the vehicle to show case some of our top actors, singers and dancers, and to discover a lot of hidden talent. Well done to all and a big thanks to Ms Kawalsky, Ms Le Chat and Ms Martens for all their hard work.

Groote Schuur Derby Day:
For the second year we held a Derby Day against Groote Schuur High School on 25 August. Camps Bay was the host, and we were able to provide a beautiful venue with stunning weather. The games were evenly contested with some games won and some lost. So at the end of the day, sport was the winner. Thanks to Mr Nyathi for the organisation of the day and to Mr van Heerden and his team for ensuring that the school was looking its best.

Fashion Show:
On 7 and 8 September we were treated to an excellent fashion show.
I was delighted that over 75% of the Grade 11’s took part in the Fashion Show. The success of this show was thanks to the pupils' dedication and hard work, the tutor teachers, the parents and Mrs Cronje. For the first year we have had a group of very hard-working and involved parents who did a lot of the leg work behind the scene to secure clothes and sponsors.

Past Pupils’ Sports Day:
The winter sports season ended with our Past Pupils’ Sports Day, which was held on 1 September. It is always great to see former pupils (and in many cases their parents, too) return to the school for a morning of sport and socializing. A great time was had by all, and we were again impressed with the large number of past pupils who attended.
After the sports we treated them to some snacks and cool drinks in the seminar room. Thanks to Vivienne Ashcroft for arranging this.

Matric Dance:
"Alice in Wonderland" was the Theme for this year’s Matric Dance. On 1 September at Kelvin Grove Hotel, the Matrics arrived to a dance venue that looked incredible. A dedicated group of Matric parents had gone to great lengths to make the venue look just magical. It was a memorable evening that was thoroughly enjoyed by all Matrics and the teachers.
Traditionally the Matric Dance is a ‘Rite of Passage’ event that marks the beginning of the changing relationship between the Matrics and their teachers. This is the first step towards releasing them into the world as young adults. This dance was a fitting occasion to mark this moment.

MYSCHOOL CARD:
Card Transactions and Funds Raised
We have over 600 families at our school. This is a letter we received from MYSCHOOL CARD. We encourage more to make use of the card, which helps Camps Bay High School to raise funds. We put application forms into all reports at the end of last term and hopefully you have all applied for your cards.

Please find attached your MySchool statement and information pack for Camps Bay, High School, showing your funds raised. Our records show that your organisation has raised R1 980-49 this month, against R2 114-01 last month.
239 supporters raised funds for your school this month, whilst 241 supporters used their MySchool card to support you last month.
PUPIL ACHIEVERS:
We are very proud of all our pupils’ achievements. A number of pupils have excelled in sports that are not offered by the school. I would like to take some space in this newsletter and the next newsletter to mention their performances.
WESTERN PROVINCE BODY BOARDING
Luke Kitchin (Grade 10) has been selected for the WP Body Boarding side which will represent WP at the Nationals in Margate later in the year. Well done, Luke!
SKIM BOARDING
On Sunday 29 July 2012, James Dean took part in the Skim Freeze 2012 Skimboarding Contest and was placed Third. This is a huge achievement as he was the youngest contestant in a field of about 20 Skimmers. James is also the youngest, most serious Skimboarder in Cape Town. This is a fairly new sport which has a small dedicated following but is growing slowly. Well done, James!
Skimboarding is a relatively new sport in South Africa although it has been going since the 1970’s in the United States. Contests such as the United Skim Tour, Victoria World Championship of Skimboarding and many others take place annually in Europe and America and the sport has been grabbing sponsors such as Hurley and Billabong in the USA and has grown extensively since it began.
James will be competing in a competition in Durban on 28 September. He has also been invited personally by the Handsdown Team to go on their Tour from 1 to 6 October to promote the sport.
James’ goal is to one day compete internationally in America and world wide.
BALLET
Zoe Gadeyne in Grade 9 participated in the annual Royal Academy of Dance Bursary Competition on Sunday 12 August. This is a very prestigious competition and participants include many very talented dancers. Although she was one of the youngest competitors, Zoe won the competition and will be flying, with all expenses paid, to spend two weeks at the Royal Ballet School in London in June next year.
DRAMA
We are always proud of our drama pupils who compete in competitions outside the school. One of our pupils performed in the recent TDA Eistedfodd. Well done to Athena Strates in Grade 10, who achieved Gold in all three disciplines she competed in, namely the Monologue, the Section and the Group Piece.
ENGLISH OLYMPIAD
Congratulations to Andrea Colombo (Grade 11) who came 15th in the country in the English Olympiad. This on its own is a remarkable achievement. However, even more amazing is the fact that she was the only Grade 11 in the Top 15, all the others being Grade 12 pupils. She received her medal and prize at a prestigious event at Rhodes University in Grahamstown.
DEBATING
On 11 and 12 August, the Camps Bay High School Debating Team competed in the South African School’s Debating Board Provincial Championships. This tournament is by invitation only and it is an honour simply to be invited. The team consists of Anna Tchalov, Oscar van der Spuy, Hannah Fagan and Connor de Wet.
We are proud to announce that after two gruelling days of debating, our team won the tournament. Hannah Fagan and Connor de Wet were also selected to attend Provincial trials as they were ranked in the top 18 speakers of the tournament.

KITE SURFING
Dylan Adriaens - Kiteboarding Update.
Last season (2011/2012), Dylan took part in the Lagoona Mall Racing series. He raced very hard during all season and almost lost his kite on the reef in the deep just off Big Bay when he had to release it because he was getting pulled into the reef. Fortunately the NSRI crew responded quickly and got him out of the water. He’s position is Fourth overall in the series, which was a very good result as he raced in the Pro class and competed against competitors of all ages where he was the youngest.
Currently Dylan is just getting fit for the new season and there has not been wind for a while, so Dylan could not train but he will take any opportunity to get back on the water.
KARATE
Both Kanya Spayire and Sipho Pokololo were selected to represent Western Province at the Goju Kai Karate National Championships. This event was held in Port Elizabeth from 1 to 2 September. This is an outstanding achievement with the goal of preparing the SA Team to compete in the World Championships in India in 2013.
ICE SKATING
Matthew Samuels has won the Nationals for four years in a row and was Defending Champion this year when he had to withdraw, due to food poisoning. He is the current Western Province Champion and was elected to be part of a team of skaters to join the ‘Academy’ for talented skaters. He is in a programme preparing him for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Korea. He has already represented South Africa in Paris, France and Korea.
GOLF
Laylaah Abrahams, a Grade 8 pupil at Camps Bay High School, began showing her talent on the golf course from a young age. She has been playing for three years and competitively for two years now. She is currently a member at Rondebosch Golf Club, playing off a 22 handicap.
Laylaah was selected for the Western Province Girls' Golf Squad for 2012 and has already represented WP at the National Rose Bowl Tournament at Pearl Valley, Paarl earlier this year, as well as on tour at the South African Girls Championships, which was held in Orkney, Orange Free State in June.
Laylaah believes, “Golf is one of the things that she is fairly good at and she really loves the game”.
AJAX CAPE TOWN FORMS RELATIONSHIP WITH CAMPS BAY HIGH SCHOOL
The renowned Cape Town soccer team, Ajax, came to visit Camps Bay High School on 30 October 2012.

They engaged in a great autograph-signing session and gave our learners the opportunity to take photos with their favourite player. They also handed 750 tickets over to Camps Bay, to go and support their match on Friday, 31 August 2012 at Cape Town Stadium. This was the experience of a lifetime for the attendees. Ajax wants us to attend and support their home matches from now on. We hope that our relationship will blossom.

SCHOOL FEES
(A Quick Update...)
Statements were sent out every month, and the number of emailed statements is increasing, saving costs and the environment. You, too, can receive e-mailed statements, just let me know your e-mail address. In fact, for ALL fee-related questions, please e-mail me at sdenning@campsbayhigh.co.za and we shall be glad to help.
We have received regular payments from most parents, and are most grateful for that. One of the best investments you can make is in the education of your children.
By now, the balance on your account should be no more than 20% of the total Annual Fees. If this is not the case, please contact me urgently, and together we can aim at a solution and way forward. If I do not hear from you, I may have to hand over all remaining fees to our collection agency, adding costs not only to you, but for us as well.
Financial assistance will no longer be awarded after 31 December for this year. The time to ask is now!
We always prefer payment via EFT for all payments, be they for school fees or monies for camps and outings. For example, your family reference number (on your statement) will suffice for school fee payments. Other payments should include your reference number and purpose,e.g. DEN001Gr10camp. By paying directly via EFT, not only do you save on bank charges, but we do as well. It is extremely costly for us to deposit cash. It also eliminates the danger that the cash gets lost between home and school.
