Dear Parents

It is with a heavy heart that I want to inform you of events that unfolded in the school over the last 2 weeks. There were allegations that some prefects smoked grass. They were tested and came out clean. However, in the course of the investigation 4 prefects admitted they had smoked dagga (privately, not at school or at any school related activity). I include below the statement I made to the school at a special Assembly on Wednesday 10th February.

SPECIAL ASSEMBLY

Assembly is a place to share good news but also as a school to confront some hard realities.

The prefects take an oath to conduct themselves at all times in accordance with the school rules. They are our role models, and we hold then to a higher standard than anyone else. We expect them to live out our drug free and alcohol free policy in their time as prefects. It is a high honour to be a prefect, and so the consequences for making a mistake are also higher.

It is with great sadness that I have to tell you that 4 of our prefects have admitted to smoking dagga in the last while. This was after they became prefects and took the prefects oath not to do drugs.

They all realise that they have made a massive mistake and are sorry for this. However, the consequence is that they will no longer be prefects. This will be the only punishment they face. They will be allowed to continue in their other leadership roles and school duties without any prejudice.

Our school’s policy is to forgive and forget. There is a consequence for this action. These boys have taken the first step back into a trust relationship by being honest about what they have done. We as a school community accept their apology, and forgive them.

I ask each of you, and especially the Grade 12’s to not let this mistake affect the friendship and relationships that have grown over many years together. Before your stand in judgement, think to yourself. Have I never make a big mistake?

So can I also appeal to all parents to give these boys a chance to restore the trust and faith we placed in them.

CELL PHONE PUNISHMENT

A reminder to parents of the rules we have governing cell phones/ipods in the school. We do not have an outright ban on phones, as we recognize that they are needed for communication. We only see 1 or 2 phones a month being confiscated.
The rules and consequences are as follows:

iPods, MP3 players, earphones, headphones in the school building (corridors & classrooms)
= 2 weeks confiscation minimum (for the 1st offence, longer periods thereafter)

Cell-phone (if seen by a teacher in class)
1st offence = 8 hour confiscation (day) + 1 hour DT
Second offence & more – one calendar month confiscation

SPORT

BASKETBALL
Well done to both teams for playing hard fought matches against Herzlia. The U16 team drew 14 – 14 and the U19’s drew 12 – 12.

Interschools Athletics
Camps Bay High School hosted an Interschools Athletics meeting on the 16th February 2010 between Camps Bay, Bosmansdam, Harold Cressy, Fairmont High, Edgemead High and Oude Molen. The afternoon proved a most enjoyable ‘festival’ of Athletics. Some records fell and many personal bests were recorded. A big thanks to David Fouche of First National Bank for their generous sponsorship of the day. When all the events were done and the points totaled, Camps Bay came third, with Fairmont first and Bosmansdam second. Thanks to Ms Dawn Pieters for the organization and all our teachers for their hard work.

Yours sincerely
