On Tuesday, 23 February 2010, the Grade 12 Science and Geography pupils accompanied by their teachers paid an enriching and interesting visit to the Koeberg Visitors Centre. It was explained to the pupils how the main power plant works and the process of nuclear power was shown on a video.

Camps Bay High School
February 2010
Dear Parents
It is with a heavy heart that I want to inform you of events that unfolded in the school over the last 2 weeks. There were allegations that some prefects smoked grass. They were tested and came out clean. However, in the course of the investigation 4 prefects admitted they had smoked dagga (privately, not at school or at any school related activity). I include below the statement I made to the school at a special Assembly on Wednesday 10th February.
SPECIAL ASSEMBLY
Assembly is a place to share good news but also as a school to confront some hard realities.
The prefects take an oath to conduct themselves at all times in accordance with the school rules. They are our role models, and we hold then to a higher standard than anyone else. We expect them to live out our drug free and alcohol free policy in their time as prefects. It is a high honour to be a prefect, and so the consequences for making a mistake are also higher.
It is with great sadness that I have to tell you that 4 of our prefects have admitted to smoking dagga in the last while. This was after they became prefects and took the prefects oath not to do drugs.
They all realise that they have made a massive mistake and are sorry for this. However, the consequence is that they will no longer be prefects. This will be the only punishment they face. They will be allowed to continue in their other leadership roles and school duties without any prejudice.
Our school’s policy is to forgive and forget. There is a consequence for this action. These boys have taken the first step back into a trust relationship by being honest about what they have done. We as a school community accept their apology, and forgive them.
I ask each of you, and especially the Grade 12’s to not let this mistake affect the friendship and relationships that have grown over many years together. Before your stand in judgement, think to yourself. Have I never make a big mistake?
So can I also appeal to all parents to give these boys a chance to restore the trust and faith we placed in them.
CELL PHONE PUNISHMENT
A reminder to parents of the rules we have governing cell phones/ipods in the school. We do not have an outright ban on phones, as we recognize that they are needed for communication. We only see 1 or 2 phones a month being confiscated.
The rules and consequences are as follows:
iPods, MP3 players, earphones, headphones in the school building (corridors & classrooms)
= 2 weeks confiscation minimum (for the 1st offence, longer periods thereafter)
Cell-phone (if seen by a teacher in class)
• 1st offence = 8 hour confiscation (day) + 1 hour DT
• Second offence & more – one calendar month confiscation
SPORT
BASKETBALL
Well done to both teams for playing hard fought matches against Herzlia. The U16 team drew 14 – 14 and the U19’s drew 12 – 12.
SWIMMING
Camps Bay swimmers took part in a gala at home against 5 other schools. It was a highly entertaining gala and we are extremely proud that Camps Bay came FIRST. Well done to all the Camps Bay swimmers.

Interschools Athletics
Camps Bay High School hosted an Interschools Athletics meeting on the 16th February 2010 between Camps Bay, Bosmansdam, Harold Cressy, Fairmont High, Edgemead High and Oude Molen. The afternoon proved a most enjoyable ‘festival’ of Athletics. Some records fell and many personal bests were recorded. A big thanks to David Fouche of First National Bank for their generous sponsorship of the day. When all the events were done and the points totaled, Camps Bay came third, with Fairmont first and Bosmansdam second. Thanks to Ms Dawn Pieters for the organization and all our teachers for their hard work.
Yours sincerely

A very successful Open Day was held at Camps Bay High School on Wednesday, 18 February 2010. Current Grade 7's from all our feeder school, as well as their parents, were invited to the school to experience a few hours on the campus. The pupils and parents were entertained by our Marimba Band, Rock Band, dancers and then taken on a tour of the school. There was great excitement amongst the Grade 7's when they visited various departments, such as the Science Lab and Drama Department.

This year’s RCL camp was very successful. All 17 learners together with Mrs Cronje and Mr Cunliffe arrived at our “RCL Headquarters” at Yzerfontein on Friday afternoon. Much brainstorming and planning took place over the weekend, together with team building exercises and leadership courses. Many important ideas and issues were raised, which will be discussed in detail at a later stage.

head prefect 2010 message
Good Morning School
So for the past however many years, the talk in this country has been 2010. 2010 this, 2010 that, and when discussing South Africa, the conversation always turns to 2010. Now it’s here. It’s arrived and for most people it doesn’t feel any different, but maybe that’s just because we haven’t opened your eyes to it.
The way I see it, is that our whole country has been so involved in preparations for 2010 and now it’s arrived all our country can do is make the best of it. I think a similar situation has arisen at our school. Since us matrics have been here, it seems that every year our school as a whole improves. It seems like every year our sports teams are stronger, our academics get better and we take part, competitively or not, in so much more. And now, it’s 2010. This is it! This is the year where our whole school can over-perform, where our records can be broken and where previous expectations can fly out the window.
I think as a school we can raise the bar for 2010, in some ways it’s already been done. The 100% matric pass rate last year as well as the higher work standards we’ve all heard about. The trick is to bring that higher standard into all aspects of our school life. We have SO MUCH talent. Culture, sport, academics we have it all, and now it’s up to us.
If we can go into this year saying “2010 THIS IS IT” and put our heart into everything we do, then we can prove to other schools that we all share a passion that is only found right here at Camps Bay High School.
Standing here before you, I am so excited for this year. I’ll admit it, I’m nervous for the year ahead, but the potential that is here within this hall is enormous. So I’m going to ask you guys to help me. Let’s take this school to heights we’ve never reached before, because I have high expectations for all of you and more importantly for this school as a whole. I know we can do it. Let’s really make 2010 a year to remember. THIS IS IT!
