CBHS Newsletter 5 - Apr '13

Dear Parents,

We are in the third week of the Second Term and all school activities are well under way. There is one change to the calendar and that is the Westerford Derby which has been moved to 4 May 2013. This is a full morning of sport which will be hosted by us this year. Can I encourage you to come and support Camps Bay from 08h00 to 13h00.

Book Day - 24 April:

The school celebrated Book Day with most of the teachers dressing up as characters from well-known books. The pupils then had to guess who they were. We allowed them to use their phones to Google the answers. There were many characters who even some of the teachers did not know. In the end it promoted books and the love of reading.

Buildings:

If you look carefully at the front of the school you may notice a very slight difference in the colour of the window frames. We have had all the windows replaced by the WCED, as well as all the green panels that were broken.

The plumbing project continues in front of the school, but the internal work is complete. The contractors are presently re-surfacing the two quads (inside and outside areas). We still plan to build two new classrooms and a cultural centre and are waiting for the WCED to approve the project, even though we will have to pay for it.

Pupil Achievements:

I would like to congratulate the following pupils on their great achievements:

  • Sipho Pokolo who will travel to Mumbai, India in December 2013 to compete in the 6th Karate-do Goju Kai World championships;
  • Kiyan van Rensburg who in March was awarded his Springbok Scout badge. This is the highest Award you can get as a Scout;
  • Oscar Armstrong competed in Egypt in the African Continent Kiteboard Racing Championship and achieved a Silver medal. This improved his world ranking status to 6th in the world;
  • Brode Gleeson took part in the West Coast Body Boarding Classic and came 1st in the Junior category;
  • Luke Kitchin competed in the West Coast Body Boarding Classic and was placed second in the Junior Category. He also competed in the Cape Classic, being placed 2nd in the juniors and 7th in the Pro division;
  • Sky Beveridge swam in the Level 2 Swimming Championships held at the University of the Western Cape. He came home with 4 gold and 1 silver medal;
  • Matthew Samuels travelled to Manila in the Philippines to compete in the International (Ice) Skating World Development Trophy. He came home with a gold medal for his top performance.

Academic Programme:

The pressure is on to be well prepared for the exams that lie ahead at the end of this term. We start writing in just four weeks’ time and so every moment needs to be well spent. Could  you discuss ways that you as a family can work to help your child to produce their very best performance? Some ideas might include:

  •  Looking at the family commitments and programme to ensure there is enough time to study;
  • Deciding on a study time when the family will help the child to be disciplined and get down to work;
  • Any help in organising and planning a study timetable;
  • A change in travel arrangements to allow your child to attend the free extra lessons that are offered in some subjects after school;
  • Any specific needs your child may have regarding their academic preparation.

KAMPSBAAI KOEL IN AFRIKAANS:

Dear Parents

The Afrikaans department has decided that we would like to make use of electronic facilities and therefore we have created our own website (KAMPSBAAI KOEL IN AFRIKAANS) which has been operational from Monday 15 April 2013. On the website you and your child will be able to see what is happening in the Afrikaans Department in every Grade. Worksheets, exam papers information etc will be placed on the website on a weekly basis. If you need to know more Google the heading and follow the links.

Regards
