CBHS Newsletter 5 - May '12

Dear Parents

As you look at your child’s school report, I hope that you will discuss with them what you think of their efforts this term. So many of our pupils have worked really hard and do need to be commended for this. I know there is always room for improvement, but we also need to recognise when a pupil has given their best. The comments from their subject teachers will help you gain insights into their performance, ability, conduct and application in each subject.

The My School Card:
If you do not already have a MY SCHOOL CARD then would you please get one and in doing so support our school financially every time you shop at a MY SCHOOL affiliated shop.
There are two ways you can do this:
1. Apply online at www.myschool.co.za – click on the ‘get a My School card’ and fill out the online application.
2. Apply using the application form that is included with your child’s report. Send it back to the school next term and we will do the rest.

Thank you for your support in this regard.

Subject Changes:
The Grade 10 and Grade 11 learners will not be allowed to make any further subject changes after 20 July 2012. Also, no further subject changes will be allowed to happen. This is a directive from the Education Department.

English Olympiad:
We were delighted to learn that Andrea Colombo in Grade 11 has been placed in the top 15 in the country in the 2012 English Olympiad. She, along with the other 14 pupils from around the country have been invited to attend a Gala Function in Grahamstown. Here, the actual places of the top 15 English Olympians will be announced. We will be holding thumbs for her!

Third Term Calendar:
The Third Term calendar is enclosed for your information. One of the many highlights of the term will be the staging of the musical Fame (on 23 to 25 July). I would encourage all families to make every effort to see this school production.

Matric Matters:
Matrics and Matric parents are reminded of three important dates:

Matric Pupil and Parents meeting:
All matrics are asked to attend the ‘Last Lap’ meeting on 18 July at 5 pm. After a 30-minute meeting, there will be an opportunity to meet the teachers and discuss the Second Term report;

The Matric Dance:
The venue is the Kelvin Grove in Newlands, and the function is to be held on 1 September 2012.

Matric Prelims:
The ‘mock matric’ exams start on the 4 September 2012. There is a lot of work to cover before this date and so all matrics must ensure that they start early enough in their preparation.

Holiday Tours:
We wish our U19 Soccer pupils who are going on tour to Bloemfontein all of the very best;
Also, our 1st Rugby Team who will be going to East London on tour, we wish you every success;
The Grade 12 Drama Class will be travelling up to Grahamstown for the Festival, and so we trust they have a very worthwhile experience.

A big thanks to the Academic Staff who have put in a massive effort this term to ensure that all the work was covered thoroughly. A big thanks to all the Teachers for all that they do to make the whole educational experience at Camps Bay High so rich and complete.

I hope you all, parents, pupils and staff, enjoy a well-earned rest.

Yours sincerely

DAVID DE KORTEPRINCIPAL

CAMPS BAY COMMUNITY POLICE FORUM

The Car Guard Problem:
As you probably very aware, the Camps Bay Community Police Forum has been in talks with the City as well as various Law Enforcement agencies since 2006 regarding our less-than-satisfactory situation regarding illegal, ill-disciplined and often violent/criminal informal car guards that continue to harass the public and enforce parking fees along the Camps Bay strip as well as up the adjacent side roads.

Besides the current actual cost to parkers, the hidden and resulting total cost to the residents, visitors and businesses in terms of bad experiences, grime and litter, the cost of crime incidents, bad publicity and poor image for the area as a whole continue to have their effect on Camps Bay as a sought-after destination.

Having considered and tried a multitude of different proposals/solutions - none of which have borne meaningful long-term results - we initiated and attended various meetings with the City to discuss and understand their official Kerbside Management Policies, as well as their proposed Pay-for-Parking solution.

In addition, the Camps Bay Community Police Forum have been instrumental in engaging and managing a total public area Road Safety Project, which has been rolling out over the past five years in accordance with priorities and budget requirements.

There will be a Public Information Meeting being hosted by the Camps Bay Community Police Forum at the Rotunda on Tuesday 29 May 2012 at 7 pm to discuss and give feedback on the above matters as well as other related issues.
