newsletter august 2010

Dear Parents

The Western Cape branch of the South African Principal’s Association hosted their National Conference in the Convention Centre at the end of last week. One of the speakers that really challenged the 800 delegates from all 9 Provinces was Prof Brian O’Connell. Professor O’Connell is the Vice Chancellor of the University of the Western Cape. He challenged us to stop ‘dreaming’ that things would get better in South Africa just because we are South Africans. This culture that we as a nation are special and would succeed merely on this culture he called exceptionalism. The challenge is to work and work very hard. Brian asked repeatedly why we thought we could do things without actually doing them. To illustrate this he shoed a number of pictures of the world map, where he digitally altered the shape of the countries depending according to various criteria. When he introduced the criteria’s of new patents registered, a number of library books read, Africa virtually disappeared while China, India and Japan grew out of all proportion to their normal size. To the principals present this was a call to action. The only hope for our future is to equip all our pupils with the knowledge and skills to compete in the global economy. The delegates were amused when he noted that we need a new mind-set for success, this includes not always saying what is government doing, and having a lot less than 21 children,

The Grade 11 Fashion Show on the 3rd and 4th September was fantastic. The theme was real and surreal, and all the groups developed creative ways of exploring this. Ms Martens and her teacher team included a massive group of Grade 11’s in the show. We were enthralled by their presentation and the evening was a great success.

On Monday 13th September, we held our Assembly next to our new pool. The water is in and the pool looks stunning. At Assembly I informed the pupils of how we came to re-doing the pool, what it entailed and how we would be utilizing. It. It also mentioned our dreams for the future to heat and cover the pool. A more immediate plan for 2011 is to put some permanent stands against the bank. To end the Assembly Mr Cottle and I had some rivalry around who should have the right to get into the pool first. We then surprised everyone by simply diving in then and there. On Tuesday we held our first boys waterpolo practice. However, the water temperature kept the practice fairly short. A big thanks must go to Colin Harvey, the Governor who has managed this project from start to finish.

The Matrics are coming to the end of their Prelims. These exams have gone very well, and we are hoping that they have all achieved the results they deserve. The Matrics will get their reports on the last day of term (Thursday 23rd September at 11am)

We widh our Grade 11 pupils well as they go to Paarl for the Grade 11 Leadership Camp next week (Monday 20th – Wednesday 21st September. Over these 3 days they will be given many varied experiences in working as a team and leading their teams in various tasks.

(16h30 – 18h30)

The reports will be handed out a a Parent Meeting on WEDNESDAY 22ND SEPTEMBER. The meeting will start at 16h30 with a 20 minute genrezl meeting from 16h30 to 16h50. After this time the reports will be handed out and then there will be an opportunity to meet with the teachers. The meeting will end at 18h30. To allow the Jewish parents and teachers to get home in time for supper and the stat of Succot.

We will be working in all classes up to and including Wednesday 22nd September. These will be nborma school days. On Thursday the 23rd Setpember we will have a sports’s programme and movie programme for the pupils and will end school at 11am.

Yours sincerely
